The Ides of March

I made sure I secured tickets to see the ides of march when it came out. There are only three theaters in Singapore showing it, and they each have only 1 showtime per day. Unbelievable. The same happened with Tree of Life which I wanted to watch so bad but there were never available shows to catch. So this time I booked my tickets well in advance and all that and finally watched ides of march today. Whaaat. It was so good. The movie is full of talented and good looking people. It’s unreal.

I’ll admit though, the main reason I wanted to watch this movie so bad at first was the cast. BOTH george clooney AND ryan gosling. The girls evan rachel wood and marisa tomei. Freaking star-studded. Checked IMDB, four stars, booked tickets pronto.

I never really got what girls saw in Ryan Gosling. Yeah he’s hot but he’s not that cute. But hell he is such a good actor. And he continuously chooses such amazing roles for himself that propel his acting career upward and forward. He might have started off being the teenage heartthrob but he is such a serious actor now with serious acting skills. He’s been taking on a myriad of roles and he just keeps delivering. And the decisions he makes reflect on him and he just seems like such a smart guy who cleverly built his image from day one to what he is today. If you think ryan gosling, you’re going to think, smart, hot, insanely cute and funny. In other words, he’s george clooney. He’s leonardo dicaprio. He’s up there now with the big guys. Definitely among the top actors in hollywood.

(As if these guys aren’t good looking enough already, they have a presence that is so consuming and attractive *swoon*)

So I really respect the guy, how hard and clever he works to progress in his career today. Did you know George Clooney directed and wrote the screenplay for ides of march? Freaking amazing. He’s always pushing boundaries and not resting on his laurels. Ryan gosling strikes me as the same kind. But we’ll wait to see. The movie is kind of sad and realistic at the end, circumstances change and force people to change. You don’t really have a choice. It’s a sad truth. And even more sadly, nice guys do finish last…

Anyway, I believe that many others were equally excited to see the movie too, because in my row alone there were three people who went to see the movie alone. That really says a lot about how desperately you want to see a movie. In front of me there were two different people who went alone as well. Would you go to see a movie alone? I never have, but I gladly would for georgie george.

Video of the day: Hudson- Against The Grain

Here’s a super cute video of a super cute song by Hudson. The title is Against The Grain and the video features stop-motion effects of stationery that illustrate the song lyrics very well. The pencils sway with the rhythm and tell the story. Which is basically about not slacking off and following your heart.

Watch and support! It’s nice to hear something simple and raw once in a while. The video really helped too.

Party Playlist #2

Only good stuff on this playlist. That’s why it’s the lucky number seven. I didn’t fill it to 10 with rubbish, just seven all killer no filler.

I can’t say I fully appreciated deadmau5 until recently. His brand of progressive house takes you from the dancefloor to when you’re doing your work. It’s so flexible because his beats are like chillectronic. So good.

I’m dishing out all the party tunes because party season is just around the corner!! Getting nearer and nearer 🙂

Chivas Regal: Live with chivalry. Here’s to friendship.

I’m not really a drinker. I love beer and champagne and a fruity martini but I can’t deal with anything else. This ad by Chivas makes me want to take a shot though. To friendship.

The two short films show four friends going through shit together, and later looking back and laughing at it over drinks. It really showcases the essence of how a good drinking session brings good friends even closer.

I think they did a great job emphasizing their brand message that is the importance of friendship. I don’t know about you but the only time and the only reason I drink is when I’m with my friends and having fun. And if you too bond with your friends over drinks then you can totally relate to this short film too.

I can see why they use dudes too. Chivas is really not a girl’s drink, no point going out of the way to reach the female audience when they’re still not going to drink it in the end. It’s a pretty manly drink.

Of course girls still appreciate this short film and its underlying message, just like how we all LOVED the hangover which was supposed to be a “dudes” show.

Exactly why I don’t listen to dubstep

I think the dubstep that has come over to the US, and certain producers — who I can’t even be bothered naming — have definitely hit upon a sort of frat-boy market where there’s this macho-ism being reflected in the sounds and the way the music makes you feel. And to me, that is a million miles away from where dubstep started. It’s a million miles away from the ethos of it. It’s been influenced so much by electro and rave, into who can make the dirtiest, filthiest bass sound, almost like a pissing competition, and that’s not really necessary. And I just think that largely that is not going to appeal to women. I find that whole side of things to be pretty frustrating, because that is a direct misrepresentation of the sound as far as I’m concerned. – James Blake

I don’t listen to dubstep so I don’t have a whole lot to say about it, but James Blake sufficiently covered my thoughts on it with the last bit of his quote. When I listen to dubstep all I hear is noise and piercing technologic sounds and I really cannot learn to appreciate it as much as I try.

This has got to be the funniest music video ever. The guys who brought you Barbra Streisand are BACK. With something so outrageous it makes barbra streisand look so weak. Got to give them credit for always stepping up with creativity and originality. Presenting Duck Sauce – Big Bad Wolf. The song is so annoying but the video is so disgusting it’s funny.

I guess I should warn you what it’s about before you hit the play button. Be prepared to expect to see faces on crotches. Like facedick. That’s all I will say!

It’s really really good publicity though, gets people talking. Hope you enjoyed it.

Rockstud on my wish list

While shopping recently, I spotted these Valentino Rockstud ankle wrap flats. A lady was trying them on and my mom pointed them out to me. They are the best rendition of the original Rockstud so far I think. A beauty.

Party People, on your mark

 

December is around the corner… And that means party season is nearing. YES. The crowds and traffic jams aside, I’m sure I speak for all of us when I say it’s the happiest time of the year. Friends, family and partyy. Let’s kick it off early with a short party playlist. Here you go:

All the songs off it are great, they got crazy beats and put you in a sick mood. But I highlighted Turn It Down (Le Castle Vania Remix) cuz its effing amazing. Way freaking amazing. I can go ape shiz on this thing.

Levi’s Go Forth Manifesto

I don’t know why I haven’t blogged about this sooner, but I guess I haven’t been blogging much at all. This Levi’s ad  (below) is hands down my favourite ad of the year.. It’s actually the latest installment in Levi’s ongoing Go Forth campaign which I find so rebellious and carefree. I love it.

To me, this isn’t just an ad. The main focus of the ad isn’t Levi’s jeans, it’s the huge white writings that span across two pages in magazines and half the pages. And the message resounds in your mind, you linger a while longer to appreciate the teenagers being young, wild and having fun. Suddenly you feel the fire inside you, but first, to a Levi’s store!

Sadly, a Levi’s store never excites me. Firstly, I’m not going anywhere near those ugly Curve ID jeans, *no offence* to anyone who bought them but what the hell did they do to the back pocket logo?? It’s fugly and the washes are all so bad and dated. I’m not sure about the fit because I never bothered to try them but my mom didn’t look that awesome in them…

The jeans they currently stock are all unworthy of such a rad campaign. I’m sorely disappointed that they’re not communicating internally because the product and the ads have such different objectives. While the ad is distinctly young and fun, the products are more suited for people like my mom *no offence* again.

Also, the stores, the people who work at the stores, and the people who are shopping at the stores contribute to the shopping/ buying levi’s experience and they all are less than exciting.

That said, amazing ad campaign. Very uplifting and inspiring.

Let’s GAP Together

Was in Hong Kong over the weekend and I bought a few of the local magazines. This ad campaign by Gap caught my eye and is worth sharing.

Each ad features an eastern personality with their western counterpart. Cuzzz Gap brings people together 🙂 Apparently the campaign aims to celebrate the freedom and liberation of China’s youth. Nice way to put it especially when you’re trying to tap into that market…
